Maryland breweries by region

Updated

This site grew out of a small farm brewery in Southern Maryland, so I tend to judge a brewery by whether it is worth the drive on a day off. This guide sorts Maryland breweries by region, one sentence of character each, with a status check. Checked in 2026. If I could not find a 2025 or 2026 sign of life for a place, I left it out, and the closures this year are a good reason to be strict. For a ranked list, see best breweries in Maryland. For my home turf, see Southern Maryland breweries.

How many breweries are in Maryland?

The Brewers Association's 2025 state statistics count 132 craft breweries in Maryland, 23rd in the nation. Counts shift because the industry is churning: nationally, 501 craft breweries closed and 434 opened in 2024, the first net decline since 2005. The state's own trade group, the Brewers Association of Maryland, is the place to check membership.

Baltimore

One loss matters here. The Brewer's Art, the Mount Vernon brewpub behind the abbey-style Resurrection, shut on February 2, 2026 after 30 years.

Eastern Shore

Not every Shore story ended well: Gateway Craft Brewing in Salisbury closed permanently after a final potluck on January 25, 2025.

Jubilee Farm Fermentations, the farm brewery this site is named for, moved to Historic St. Mary's City in early 2026 under a new name, The Farthings Fermenter; I have not yet confirmed the new pub's opening, so it is not on the list. I wrote about how that kind of license works in what is a farm brewery.

What beer is Maryland famous for?

National Bohemian, Natty Boh, is the obvious answer. The lager was first brewed in Baltimore in 1885, became the city's official beer in 1965, and still sells mostly in Baltimore, though it has not been brewed there since 1996. For craft, the names people reach for are Heavy Seas and Flying Dog's Raging Bitch, plus Resurrection from The Brewer's Art, which is now a memory unless someone revives it. The Great American Beer Festival is a fair scorecard. In 2025, only four Maryland breweries medaled in Denver.

Is Flying Dog still in Maryland?

The brand is, the brewery is not. F.X. Matt Brewing of Utica, New York bought Flying Dog in May 2023, and the Frederick brewery stopped making beer by August 2023. FX Matt said then that it wanted an innovation brewery and taproom in Frederick. On its own Our Story page, Flying Dog says the brand was close to extinction in 2024 and that FX Matt, its contract brewer for about eight years, stepped in. The page promises events and pints around Maryland. It does not announce a Frederick taproom, and I found no 2025 or 2026 confirmation of one. My read: Flying Dog is still Maryland's dog in marketing, but the beer is no longer brewed here.

Plan a trip

Hours change, so check each brewery before you drive. For regional trails and events, Visit Maryland is the official tourism hub. Checked in 2026, and I will keep trimming this page as places close.
